Sobre este artículo

Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1991. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near fine. Association copy, inscribed in the year of publication to well-known environmental editor Les Line and his wife on half-title page: "For Lois & Les--The tree-hugging Michiganders, Mitch, aka John, February 1991." Uncommon signed. Les Line was the longtime editor of Audubon magazine (this book is inscribed in the year that he was replaced for taking too narrow and sometimes controversial editorial approach, with a focus on wildlife, at a moment where Audubon was looking to expand the scope of its environmental concerns). John G Mitchell wrote eight books, was a former editor of Sierra Club books, and was an editor and writer for National Geographic. An exploration in essays of forest, their management, and the troubles the face across the country. The inscription alludes to the preface, "Tree-hugging in America," and the book ventures to the North Woods of Upper Michigan in a chapter titled "U.P." Most of these chapters first found publication in Audubon, and Les Line is given the last lines in a short acknowledgments section: "And finally, for assigning me so often to the forest beat and for granting me the freedom to pace it off my way, unrestrained by institutional policies or preachments, my thanks to Les Line, the editor of Audubon." Thus a near dedication copy, the premiere association for this book, and nice connection between environmental editors. A very near fine copy with a light bump to upper front corner; in a near fine jacket with a crease running down the full length of the back flap.

Sobre Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
