X, 196 pages, list of illustrations, introduction by author, appendix and index. Pale gray coloured endpapers. The text is illustrated with 27 black-and-white photographs/illustrations and one diagram of a container ship. Navy blue coloured boards with gilt titles to the back strip. Bumping to the top back strip age and bumping and rubbing to the lower back strip edge. Rubbing to the book corners and there is a shelf wear to the lower book edges. Dust marks and light browning to the top text block edges. Photographic dustwrapper, showing a somewhat abstract view of London docks, with a gilt background and black titles to the front panel and back strip. On the back panel is a black-and-white illustration and black-and-white photograph showing dockers from 1855 and 1969. Author photograph to the back fold over panel. Rubbing to the dustwrapper corners. Rubbing and chipping to the head of the back strip rubbing to the liar and fading to the entire length. There has been rubbing to all edges of the dustwrapper. The back dustwrapper has become slightly dull and grubby. Clipping of the dustwrapper, font folder, lower right-hand corner. " For more than two hundred years the dockers [ workers who worked loading and unloading ships ] fought for decasualisation of labour. Finally, in September 1967, it came, together with the announcement that within 10 years most of the existing labour force would be redundant.
