Sobre este artículo
Paris: Gallimard. Very Good. 1958. First Edition Thus. Paperback. 652 pages; Bound in original cream wrappers, toned at spine and edges. Inscribed and signed on halftitle "Susan Mary [Patten] / from / Gladwyn Jebb / August 1958" ; some marginal pencil lines noting passages, otherwise contents clean and secure. A rather wonderful association, this book was given to Susan Mary Jay Patten Alsop by Gladwyn Jebb. Four years after the death of "the love of her life" and paramour Duff Cooper, U.K. Ambassador to Paris (1944-48), Susan Mary began a covert affair with Gladwyn Jebb, U.K. Ambassador to France (1954-1960). Hubert Miles Gladwyn Jebb (1900 - 1996) was a prominent British civil servant, diplomat and politician who served as the acting secretary-general of the United Nations between 1945 and 1946. Jebb entered the British Diplomatic Service in 1924 and served in Tehran and later served in Rome as well as at the Foreign Office in London. After the Second World War, Jebb played a major role in the planning and establishment of the United Nations, serving as Acting United Nations Secretary-General from October 1945 to February 1946. Returning to London, Jebb served as Deputy to the Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin at the Conference of Foreign Ministers and represented the United Kingdom at the Brussels Treaty Permanent Commission. Jebb became the United Kingdom's Ambassador to the United Nations from 1950 to 1954 and Ambassador to Paris from 1954 to 1960. From the collection of Susan Mary Patten Alsop, a popular historian and a pillar of Washington society, was the daughter of a diplomat, a descendant of founding father John Jay and served with her first husband Bill Patten at the American Embassy in Paris in the 1950s. When her husband died in 1960, she married Joseph Alsop, the journalist, the following year. In the 1970s she embarked on her own literary career producing "To Marietta From Paris: 1945-1960" (1974), followed by "Lady Sackville: A Biography" (1978), "Yankees at the Court: The First Americans in Paris" (1982), and "The Congress Dances: Vienna 1814-1815" (1984). Her Georgetown homes (both with and without Alsop) hosted dignitaries, publishers and a variety of interesting people during the 1960s and 1970s including such luminaries as John F. Kennedy, Phil Graham, Katharine Graham, and Isaiah Berlin, earning her the nickname "the grand dame of Washington society," (to which she rather objected).; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated .
