After the commune failed, Trollope moved to Cincinnati, but returned to England three years later, having formed an altogether negative view of the country as a whole. 'Domestic Manners of the Americans' was Trollope's best known work, being both popular and controversial at the time of publishing due to the overall unfavourable depiction of the American character.
