Octavo. 803pp. +70ff. plates (numbered as 67). Large volume in bound in publisher's binding: cloth spine and paper covered boards. A goldmine of information on the arts, crafts and trades. Samuel Frederck Gray, the author of "The Operative Chemist" (1828) wrote on medicine, pharmacy and botany. Arthur Livermore Porter was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vermont. With a great deal on the processing of ores and metals, on distilleries, and on heating and lighting. Ex-library, minimal markings, foxed; spine and boards detached. Pages x and 397, and plate 39 are torn. As is needs rebinding. Scarce.

Tight in possibly contemporary binding with later? title label: "Medical Topography, 1830", previous owner's name and one line comment on FEP. 2 or 3 pages with some red pencil underlining, one printer's ink stain and two pages with small repaired tears. Julius Obsequens was a 5th-century Roman author who is primarily known for his book of Prodigies, or 'Prodigiorum Liber'. This book is a collection of writings on natural wonders, signs, and calamities that occurred during the 3rd century BC in the Roman Republic. Curiously, much of what Obsequens observed was already recorded by Livy and thus wasn't taken as seriously. However, the work is still popular today for its discussion on superstitions and instances of numerous astrological signs – even reports of ancient aliens and UFOs!
This 1720 edition was published in Leiden by Samuel Luchtmans.
