London: William Pickering, 1843. First edition. Two volumes, large quartos, 29 x 21cm, unpaginated, complete with 94 full-page, color plates. Half red morocco ruled, decorated, and lettered in gilt over marbled boards, t.e.g. Some rubbing to edges, corners, and upper boards, more pronounced on volume two. Mild foxing throughout each. Bookplates of Adam Rivers Steele to front pastedowns, else clean internally. Beautifully illustrated and lavish Victorian publication depicting costume and culture mainly in the Medieval Period, stretching from the 7th to the 17th centuries. From Lowndes: "... Copper-Plates, besides numerous Woodcuts, and Initial Letters; every page being highly decorated." English engraver and illustrator, Henry Shaw (1800-1873), published works on a variety of antiquarian topics including Elizabethan Architecture, historic alphabets, coats of arms, furniture, metal work, and others. He is known for his illustration of Wells Cathedral for John Britton's "Cathedral Antiquities of England" Lowndes pg 2371.
