Octavo, original maroon buckram titled and decorated in silver and gilt, light brown coated endpapers. 336 + [8] pp ads at rear. the first American edition was issued by Appleton in March, 1899 in an edition of 1,500 copies; this second printing (of 5,000 copies) was issued later the same year. It is identified by the ads; pp [ii] has a list of six works by Doyle (the 1st issue was 19 titles) and pp [337] has an ad for GILBERT PARKER'S BEST BOOKS. See Green & Gibson, A24d. Spine a trifle dull, cloth at spine tips looks like it's going to start fraying if you look at it the wrong way; a very good, sound and clean copy.
