Rilke considered the Elegies his greatest achievement. Begun in 1912 at the castle of Duino near Trieste, these ten Elegies were finally completed after a decade of sporadic and protracted creation, in the winter of 1922. They are part of the same creative vein from which erupted, spontaneously and in far briefer time, the Sonnets to Orpheus.

Lyrically intense German-language poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926) was a guest at the Castle Duino, near Trieste, between October 1911 and May 1912. This 10-poem cycle of Duino Elegies were begun there but not finished until a decade later. Intensely mystical and religious, the work has been described as an "impassioned monologue" of one coming to terms with human existence --- of man's essential loneliness, the perfection of the angels, life and death, love and lovers. The last 4 lines read: "Then we, who think of rising happiness/ would feel the emotion/ that almost confounds us/ when a happy Thing falls". Strong copy despite flaws.
