Griffith's racist masterpiece demonized African American men but this promotional flyer has a section promoting the film as conveying a message of peace which concludes with: "Armies seldom settle disputed questions of state. But where they accomplish this much, in the wake of a conflict arise newer and more terrible questions. But for the hatreds engendered in the Civil War, the suffering of the Reconstruction period would never have been known."
