Sobre este artículo

Printed for presentation to the Roxburghe Club, Cambridge, first edition, 1977. Full red morocco, double gilt filet border on boards, top edge gilt, folio, 35 cm. xv, 31 pp, 48 plates. 8 in colour. Bound by Zaehnsdorf. A facsimile of an Early Medieval Gospel book of great iconographical interest, with an introductory study by Frances Wormald and an essay by Jonathan Alexander on a group of related manuscripts. The volume is a decorated copy of the four Gospels with canon tables, written in the Breton area in, in Caroline minuscule, in the late 9th or early 10th century. In a contemporary review, Carl Nordenfalk wrote: " The [paper] by Alexander is the first comprehensive treatment of the Breton schools and contains a great many fine remarks concerning their dependence on Carolingian prototypes. And Wormald shows that three different sources must be assumed for the illuminations of the Bradfer-Lawrence manuscript: Tours for the ornaments, and excellent Early Christian model for some of the figurative scenes, and some acquaintance with Insular Gospel books, less in style than in the lay-out. .. I would not like to end this review without a special word of praise for the high standard of printing upheld in this, as in previous volumes of the Roxburghe Club... the superb quality of the paper makes it a pleasure to turn the leaves. As to the binding, it is of the same fine workmanship as its content. In these days, when so much has changed for the worse, the Roxburghe Club publications have remained what they always were: perfect exponents of British feeling for quality.". Lord Clark's copy, with his name printed in red in the list of members and his Saltwood Castle booklabel on the front pastedown endpaper. Fine. (Sir Kenneth Clark, of "Civilization" fame).
