Great Britain: Hodder and Stoughton, 1914. Elegant binding by Bayntun of Bath. This binding was commissioned by our book shop. All edges gilt. Panelled spine with gilt lettering and designs. Gilt medallion centered on both covers with single gilt filet bordering. Marbled endpapers in blue, white, and gilt. Twenty-five tipped-in color plates by KAY NIELSEN with captioned tissue-guards. Many additional illustrations in black and white within the text. Original blue cloth front cover has been preserved and bound-in. Engraved and printed by Henry Stone and Sons, Banbury. Absolutely crisp and clean throughout. A masterpiece of book art, thought by many to be Nielsen's finest work. 206pp. Kay Nielsen(1886-1957) was born in Denmark, studied in Paris. He joined Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac as the stars of the Golden Age of Illustration, the early 20th century. He worked for the Walt Disney Company in the 1930's, illustrating parts of "Fantasia". His portfolio of work included only five books; the others being "In Powder and Crinoline", "Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Red Magic". . First Trade Edition..
