The 1884 riot followed outrage at the conviction of William Berner for manslaughter rather than murder. As a contemporary headline screamed, "At Last the People are Aroused and Take the Law into Their Own Hands, Enraged Community Rises in Its Might." (~Cincinnati Enquirer, March 29, 1884).

Louis Rombach and Theodore Groene, both previously employed by noted Cincinnati photographer Charles Waldack, established their own studio specializing in mercantile and landscape photography in 1883. By 1895 the business was advertised as "The Largest Establishment of its Kind in the United States."
