Here, the work of architect Nicolai Eigtved (1701-1754) reached its culmination. With his richly varied yet carefully controlled style, Eigtved was among the foremost representatives of the Rococo in European architecture. The palace was built for the lord high chamberlain Adam Gottlob Moltke who demanded several refinements that helped make the mansion the most impressive private residence in Denmark.
