The jacket is now protected with a removable Mylar cover. The hardcover book is in good to good minus condition, free from rips, tears, bends, and writing. The book has been hand signed, inscribed and dated by the author on the title page in black ink. All black and white illustrations are present. There are a couple of minor stains on the end pages. The boards are in good condition with minimal to no wear. The binding is tight and square.

The first three volumes of Theobald's great work Theobald's fame and contribution to English letters rests with his 1726 Shakespeare Restored, or a Specimen of the many Errors as well Committed as Unamended by Mr Pope in his late edition of this poet; designed not only to correct the said Edition, but to restore the true Reading of Shakespeare in all the Editions ever published. Theobald's 1733 Shakespeare edition was far the best produced before 1750, and it has been the cornerstone of all subsequent editions. Theobald not only corrected variants but chose among best texts and undid many of the changes to the text that had been made by earlier 18th century editors. Edmond Malone's later edition (the standard from which modern editor's act) was built on Theobald's.

16 pp. Small octavo. VG/VG. Book is fine, but for a 1-inch stain/abrasion on the front board. DJ has two small tears repaired at top of spine and a tiny (1 mm) chip at bottom of back panel. All over, a very nice impression. Inscribed by Copland in 1953 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Millard Thomson, a composer and professor at Brown. Thomson's bookplate opposite inscription. The book preserves the six Charles Eliot Norton Lectures delivered at Harvard University in May 1952 substantially as they were given. The first three lectures treat the musical mind as listener, interpreter, or creator; the remaining three discuss "the imaginative mind in the music of Europe and America."
