The first printing, [November] 1950. Publisher's light blue cloth boards with black and gilt spine label. Previous owner stamps, affixed label, and old inked price on endpapers. Boards have some staining and overall wear. Top of spine bumped affecting textblock. Spine sunned (yellowed) as normal, with some flaking of the color. Foxing to recto of the frontispiece. Musty basement smell - not bad but there nonetheless (hence the bargain price). A well loved copy. Cloth. An important book by Shockley who, with Bardeen and Brattain, co-invented the transistor and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 ''for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect''.
