Cassell, London, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. 750 g; XII, 692 pages, in original black cloth covered boards, with original illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket is chipped and rubbed across both top and bottom edges, and the rear panel shows moisture damage/staining, and the text block shows foxing to the front and top edges, and minor discolouration of the rear panel. The front fold over flap declares that this is an "Overseas Edition". In 1938 a crime was committed in a back street not far from the Elephant and Castle Tavern in Southwark. It was widely reported in the provincial as well as the London press, but public interest, engaged by affairs of greater moment, was short lived. Having some personal knowledge of the people involved, and a novelist's curiosity about them, RC Hutchinson set himself to find out everything he could about the immediate and the remoter causes of the crime:" -- rear panel blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
