Original space-flown flag (5½" X 4¼") and cloth patch (4¼" X 4 3/4") presented on a 12 3/4" X 16 3/4" cream colored heavy stock, in turn mounted to a 16" X 20" pale blue mat board. Very good. Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left (takeoff) and lower right (landing) corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal, and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois, with the word "ILLINOIS" below, against a white background. The printed text cited above appears immediately below this flag, and the crew patch below this text. JOHN YOUNG (1930-2018) signs boldly in black ink to the left of the patch, while ROBERT L. CRIPPEN (born 1937) signs to the right. The Columbia STS-1 flight was called by NASA "The boldest test flight in history." 1859 Seven partially printed and calligraphic pages on four leaves, 11.5" x 15", December 20, 1859. The document bestows the Imperial Austrian Order of the Iron Crown (Orden der Eisernen Krone) on Professor Doctor Franz Pitha. It also grants the title of Ritter (knight) on Doctor Pitha, elevates him to the Austrian nobility, and grants heraldic arms. The document is contained in a magnificent, bright red embossed velvet cover with the detailed Imperial Austrian arms in gold. The inside covers are a very light blue moiré silk. The seal of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph in red wax, and encased in the original 4.5" bronze doré skippet, is attached to the document by a gold bullion and silk cord. The entire document, including the seal and skippet are contained in a fitted tin case (12.25" x 21.5"). The seven partially printed pages are hand-lettered in black ink with some gold highlights. The document chronicles the life and achievements of Dr. Pitha from his birth in 1810 in Bohemia, through his medical training at the University of Prague, his teaching career as a professor of surgery at Charles University in Prague, and as chair of surgery at Josephs Academy in Vienna. The Emperor honored Pitha for service as chief of field medical services for the Austrian Army in the Italian Wars of Independence. Dr. Pitha dramatically improved Austrian military hygiene and the treatment of battle-related injuries. The document is boldly signed by Emperor Franz Joseph and countersigned by Agenor Goluchowski, Minister of Interior. Excellent. Photos available upon request.

A sprawling, witty and provocative letter written by Pound early on during his extended stay at St. Elizabeth's hospital (12 years, from 1948-1859) to Helen Rossetti Angeli, the daughter of famed Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood co-founder William Michael Rossetti. Written in pencil on the full opened face, with two notes perhaps by HAR, and then on both flaps on the verso, with two wrap-around portions also possibly by HA Rossetti. 1905. Good +. Signed 3-page typescript of a agreement of sale between the American Baptist Publication Society and John Wanamaker. The American Baptist Publication Society sold to John Wanamaker the Crozier Building at 1420 and 1422 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, for $900,000. The Crozier Building was designed by Frank Miles Day & Brother and was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1980. American merchant John Wanamaker (1838-1922) had made $1.5 million in profits and interest from his stores in Philadelphia and New York in 1904, suggesting that his acquisition of the Crozier Building was an investment. The Crozier Building has continued to function as a successful office building to this day. In Good+ Condition: chipping at edges; loss of lower corner of first page, with minor loss of text; separating along some of the 2 horizontal creases in each page; signatures are clean and intact.

Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward, 1873-1879, regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad, which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 (Sept. 5 and Dec. 5, 1873) are from Jos. H. McKeehan, an attorney in Philadelphia, who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 (Dec. 18, 1873) is from the Village Record, a newspaper in West Chester, Pa., with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 (Nov. 26, 1875) is from John Smith of Ridley Park, about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase.
