In an effort to redress this, the editor, RW Braithwaite, whose father was an Australian POW survivor of the marches, presents this translated account of a Japanese conscript. Although Ueno expected to fight for his emperor, instead he had to cope with exhaustion, starvation and disease which wiped out most of his comrades on the march.
