About this Item: Sign of The Gosden Head, New York, 1932. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Limited edition #232/850 book is near fine, bound in fine heavy blue cloth which has several small holes showing unusual metal boards underneath , with red leather labels to the front cover and spine. The spine label is rubbed but quite legible. The book is a former library book with cancellation notices on the front paste down and rear paste down which is was frayed when the library slip holder was removed. There is a very fine folding map illustrating the travels of Eneas ( 3350 miles in eight years.There is a very finely printed lithograph of the horse Eneas traveled with and intended to return to his former owner, major George Tommey of Louisville, Georgia. This compilation of letters to the major written by former subordinates and friends and admirers. The author Harry Stillwell Edwards (1920-2007) was a lifelong proponent of slavery which his letters illustrate with their liberal use of the "N" word and their condescending tone toward his " old family negro of mine" Eneas Africanus was purported to be the most popular pro-slavery book ever published. Book is beautifully printed on hand set English Caslon at the Asher Press. For collectors interested in the American Civil War and the following reconstruction ear, this is an important and rare book. Seller Inventory # 001552
