New York, NY: Friends of Irish Freedom, ca. 1920. First edition. Pamphlet. Good. Some wear to edges and corners of covers. 2 smal chips on rear cover, and a small tear near spine on front cover. Middle crease on front cover and on the first few pages. Some few indentations on front cover as well. 2 interior pages are browned from a now missing newspaper article which must have been placed between them. 63 p. with 1 p. ad for another pamphlet, ESCAPE FROM MONTJOY by Padraic Fleming, at rear. Introduction by a noted Irish-American mayor of San Francisco and later US Senator from California. A collection of short entries, often quoting politicians, newspapers, and other reports on the mistreatment of the Irish people, concentrating on the last 5 or so years before the pamphlet. The author was a Canadian Irish activist and public servant who had seerved 2 years in England as secretary to the agent General of Alberta. There she visited Ireland, met well-known Irish activists, learned Gaelic, and on her return to Canada published solid case for Irish independence called IRELAND. She helped organize and professionalize the group Frends of Irish Freedom, an umbrella group for a number of Irish Republican organizations. Hughes went back to Canada and spent the rest of her life working for Irish causes on 2 contintents. She died of cancer in New York City in 1925 and was buried in an unmarked grave.
