English Men of Letters was a series of literary biographies written by leading literary figures of the day under the general editorship of John Morley. This set includes thirty nine volumes spread across twenty books, with each including two volumes bound in one apart from Bentley by R. C. Jebb which is on its own. This is a complete set of the first series of these volumes across the twenty volumes. These volumes have been bound together by Hatchards and bound in the following way: Milton by Mark Pattison (1896) and Cowper by Goldwin Smith (1898). Hume by Professor Huxley (1895) and Burke by John Morley (1897). Byron by John Nichol (1894) and Landor by Sidney Colvin, (1888, new issue). Bentley R. C. Jebb (1889, new edition). Shelley by John Addington Symonds (1895) and Keats by Sidney Colvin (1899). Locke by Thomas Fowler (1883 Eight Thousand) and Sterne by H. D Traill (1889 new edition). Fielding by Austin Dobson (1883) Sheridan by Mrs Oliphant (1889). Dryden by G. Saintsbury (1894 2nd reprint) and Goldsmith by William Black (1898). Chaucer Adolphus William Ward (1896) and Spencer by R. W. Church (1894). Defoe by William Minto (1887 new edition) and Hawthorne by Henry Janes (1887). Macaulay by J. Symonds (1889) and De Quincy by David Masson (1888 new issue). Gibbon by James Cotter Morison (1887 new edition) and Carlyle by John Nichol (1894).  Southey by Edward Dowden (1888) and Wordsworth by F. W. H Myers (1899). Gray by Edmund Gosse (1889 new edition) and Bunyan by James Anthony Froude (1895).All are reprints apart from Dickens by Adolphus William Ward which is a first edition published in 1882. All are bound by Hatchards in half vellum with green cloth covered boards. Externally, generally all are very smart with some marks to the spines and a few marks to the boards. Internally, all are firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good Indeed

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
