It prints Part I of the adventure novel first published as Voyages et aventures du capitaine Hatteras (1864). Part II was published in English separately as The Field of Ice (1875). Routledge issued the present edition in many binding variants and under two titles, the other being A Journey to the North Pole. These are all dated 1875 and there is no established priority. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover pictorially blocked with North Pole scenes in gilt and black, rear cover ruled in blind, coated endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispiece, title page vignette, 24 wood-engraved plates, many engravings in the text. Ticket of Swedish bookshop named after Nathan Jacob Gumpert (1805-1854), Gothenburg, on front pastedown. Bright binding with cocked spine, bumped ends, and slight corner wear, book block a little shaken, half-title and frontispiece carefully reinserted, contents clean. A very good copy.
