Green cloth with gilt lettering and bands on spine; pale blue dj with color illus. tipped on and navy blue lettering. 410 pp. with 310 bw plates. Color frontis matches illus. on dust jacket. Both in its text and in its illustrations this is the most complete account so far published of the Table Glass produced in England, Scotland and Ireland from the sixteenth century to 1820. In compiling it Bernard Hughes has examined more than 10,000 specimens of Table Glass, many of them in the Royal and other private collections, and others in the museums and sale rooms. In combination with this wide survey of old specimens, Mr. Hughes has had an unusually close association with the technical side of the work, since for a number of years he had the opportunity to observing for a government department the processes by which the old craft has developed into the great glass industry of today. This fundamental knowledge of the industrial processes, manual and mechanical, used by the craftsmen in the past has assisted him greatly in dating specimens and in distinguishing the genuine from the forgery. - from the dj flap - A standard reference, complete with hundreds of bw plates illustrating countless examples. Extensive glossary and index.
