Lilley's article, one of the earliest on electronic digital computers written for a British popular science magazine, discusses the function and purpose of the new large general-purpose computing machines, describes the ASCC (Harvard Mark I) and ENIAC computers, and ends with an account of the British ACE machine then under development.
