Boston: Little Brown,, 1955. First edition, first printing, inscribed and illustrated by Eric Sloane on the front free endpaper, "To Mr & Mrs Max Lale from Millard Cope" and signed by Sloane underneath, "Eric Sloane Brookfield Conn. 1955." The illustration depicts a couple under an umbrella, walking past a town sign-posted "Greenville". Max Lale (1916-2006) was a decorated war veteran who worked as a publisher for the Herald-Banner in Greenville, before joining the Marshall Texas News Messenger in 1946. It was here he met Millard Cope (1905-1964), who had been appointed publisher the year before. Octavo. Red cloth, spine lettered in black, weathervane vignette to front cover. With dust jacket. Inscription and illustration on front free endpaper, dated the year of publication. Edges lightly toned and foxed, otherwise clean; a near-fine copy in a good jacket, extremities generally worn, spine faded, loss to corners and upper edge of panels. Not price clipped.
