London.. Between 1794 and 1830.. Antique botanical etching, printed in color with added handcolor, plate size approximately 13 1/2 x 7 inches on sheet 16 1/2 x 10 inches, wove paper. Very good condition (two small embossed areas from paper clips at upper edge, well outside image which is clean and bright). With sheet of descriptive text, which identifies it as a native of the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa). An orange flower with botanical details, a single plate from H. C. Andrews's "Coloured Engravings of Heaths" which was published between 1794 and 1830. Exquisitely etched and colored. "Blunt described this work as Andrews's 'finest achievement ... notable in conception and impressive in execution'. Andrews drew and engraved all his plates, wrote most of the text and, according to Dunthorne, even did his own colouring." (de Belder, "Magnificent Botanical Books" #5). .
