Michael Heyward reports on the 'Ern Malley Affair', Australia's most famous literary hoax (1943 - 1944), involving publication of bogus poems in the bohemian 'Angry Penguin' magazine of Max Harris. The sting was perpetrated by poets James McAuley and Harold Stewart, as a statement of the perceived shallowness of the modernist poems in 'Angry Penguins'.
