Knox was a teacher and an advocate for public education and instruction for boys through grammar schools rather than private home tutors. Knox was also an advocate for educating British women. He believed a good education was composed of lessons in Latin, Greek, geography, English, French, and writing. Knox was a proponent of peace and sensibility in the late eighteenth century (Oxford DNB, "Knox, Vicesimus").
