With an ownership inscription dated 1912. Croce was an intellectual leader in the opposition to Mussolini's fascist regime, and author of the Manifesto of the Anti-Fascist Intellectuals in 1925. He was also a well-recognized philosopher and historian; Aesthetic was his first major work on art and aesthetic theory, introducing his key view that art is essentially expression.
