In plastic report covers. John Joly was an Irish geologist. His theory was that if one knew how much salt was in the ocean and the rate at which salt was being added or lost by rivers and evaporation, one could calculate how long it had taken for ocean salt to accumulate and would therefore know the age of the oceans and presumably the Earth as well. His estimates turned out to be greatly understated. .
