In a note before the text Gwyther states that "It was never designed for the press, but merely for the ear of a popular assembly...." Referring to preachers who do not espouse true evangelicanism, he comments, "Let there be no mistake, however, with regard to our references here. We are intimating no danger to the Gospel , either from professed friends or from avowed foes. Never were these in their nature, in their varied forms, and in their vast numbers, more really formidable. Hume and Gibbon, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Paines were less to be dreaded than these." Perhaps he might also have in mind Byron's lines in Don Juan: "Christians have burnt each other, quite persuaded/ That all the apostles would have done as they did." Completely untraced.
