Sobre este artículo

London: J. M. Dent & Sons. Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket. 1965. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Dustjacket has wear at corners and spine ends, previous owners name on front endpaper, otherwise a very good copy in very good dustjacket. Everyman's Classical Dictionary is an entirely new work, supplanting Smith's Smaller Classical Dictionary. Considerations of space and the convenience of students suggested that the term 'classical' should cover a period beginning with the most commonly accepted date of Homer (late eighth century B. C. ) and ending with the death of Constantine (A. D. 337). The same considerations led the editor to employ the term as having reference to pagan Greece and Rome. The early history of the Church falls outside the scope of this work; and articles on persons, places, institutions and events of other civilizations-Egyptian, Persian and so forth-are supplied only when their subject-matter has a direct and contemporary bearing upon Greek and Roman history, literature, etc. Special attention has been given to geographical and topographical articles, for the benefit of readers who may take the book on their travels. Hundreds of articles are here contributed on subjects not mentioned in the old Dictionary. There is an extensive classified bibliography of general works, and many articles are followed by a list of books dealing with the particular subject. The principal legends, eg. The Atreids, Theban Legend, Jason and Medea-are told as continuous stories, with cross-references from the characters concerned. Care has been taken to cross-reference the entire work so as to give maximum help to the reader without needless repetition. ; xxxviii, 537 pages .
