Phenix Bank was accused of overcharging on exchange rates, making unlawful discounts, and accepting a bonus for 'carrying a house through its difficulties,' the bonus partially received without fulfilling its responsibilities. Newspapers fought a bitter allegation war, with the turmoil ending when the Whigs and Board of Trade were successful at forcing the resignation of Phenix Bank President John Delafield. Delafield later became President of the New York Agricultural Society.
