Philadelphia: Printed by Carr & Smith, 1801. 12mo (20 cm x 12 cm), disbound (removed from sammelband). [vii], 41 pp., 3 engravings in text, 1 loose tissue guard. Inscribed in ink by the author. An 1801 Doctor of Medicine inaugural essay for the University of Pennsylvania by William Stephen Jacob, whose experiments studied the effects of a variety of acids such as nitric, muriatic, oxalic, sulfuric on stones taken from a child, sheep and others. Includes the following engravings: Plate I, illustrating a urinary calculus taken from a woman; Plate II a stone taken from the intestines of a horse; Plate III two images of calculi taken out of the kidney of a cow. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the title-page: "To Mr. Spencer. From his friend the Author." REFERENCES: Shaw & Shoemaker, 708; Austin, R.B. Early American Medical Imprints, 1043. CONDITION: Stitching very loose, first signature detached, toning at edges, moderate soiling on pp. 20-21, minor damp-stains top center throughout.
