In Portuguese. An account of the expedition led by Cándido Mariano da Silva Rondon into the Amazon to explore the Jaci-Paraná River and consider the feasibility of erecting a telegraph line. Rondon, "an army officer of Indian ancestry, founded the government agency known as the Indian Protective Service..., one of the most unique organizations in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Those who worked with Rondon had to swear that they would never kill, not even in self-defense. He made many expeditions through the unexplored wilderness, establishing peaceful contact with unknown tribes and collecting an enormous amount of scientific data" (Donald E. Worcester). Contents include a summary of the Rio Jaci-Paraná, a narrative of the work accomplished, detailed astronomical observations for longitude, measurements of transverse sections of the river and calculations of water masses, tables of altitude, temperature and distances, and the exploration diary of adjutant Amilcar Botelho de Magalhães. Although the table of contents indicates maps, this copy was bound without them.
