Smthsonian "Exploring the Great West Series" dedicated to reprints of rare and out-of-print reports by America's first gov't and military explorers. First published 1852, this volume, from Major Howard Stansbury (1806 - 1863) of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, is an account of a 2-year expedition (1849-1851) he led to survey the Great Salt Lake and its environs. The narrative represents the first serious scientific exploration of the flora and fauna of the Great Salt Lake Valley, and, provides a favorable impression of the members of the Mormon Church who had settled the area circa 1847. This reprint is issued less Appendix G (Meteorological Obersations) included in the original report.
