Carroll wrote an article for Real West Magazine about a group of prospectors who may have been killed by the Sioux in the Black Hills prior to the Custer Expedition of 1874. What's known about these prospectors was found in a message left by Ezra Kind, who was one of the party. This item is a boxed presentation set given to Mr. Carroll by the magazine. It includes a black slipcase and black folding magazine holder. The magazine itself carries John Carroll's subscription label. The spine of the magazine holder has the article title and John Carroll's name in gilt. The inside of the holder has John Carroll's signed bookplate. A one of a kind item with connections to Carroll, Custer, and the Black Hills. .
