Set of four hardcovers with leather spines and paper covered boards. The spines are divided in six shields of which the second shield shows the gilded title on a red background and the fourth the volume. The mock ribs are decorated with a gilded pattern. Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. O.H. Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are a bit worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by J. Punt and Vinkeles (each story is accompanied by an engraving).l The French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time.
