Sobre este artículo

London : Hodder & Stoughton., 1909 . Cloth. Good Only. 12.5" by 10". Edward Julius Detmold. A beautifully presented and illustrated limited edition of Aesop's fables signed by the illustrator. A very sought after work. Here the casing is a very worn but good and bright internally so an excellent candidate for a rebind. Can command up to £1300 This edition is No. 258 of seven hundred and fifty copies printed. Contains twenty five fables, complemented by twenty-four tipped in plates. Aesop was a slave and story-teller from ancient Greece whose work continues to be reinterpreted in different verbal registers and in popular as well as artistic mediums. Edward Julius Detmold, the illustrator, and his brother Charles Maurice Detmold became prolific Victorian book illustrators with their work on Kipling's The Jungle Book. In a cloth binding. Externally sound, though the backstrip has split from the front board and the front joint is starting but firm. Gilt and blindstamped detailing to front board. Marks to front and rear boards. Head and tail of spine are bumped with loss. Internally firmly bound with pages bright and clear. One tipped in plate is missing, that of The Ants and The Grasshopper. Good Only

Sinopsis

Sardonic, wry and wise, Aesop's Fables are some of the most enduring and well-loved literary creations in history. In a series of pithy, amusing vignettes, Aesop created a vivid cast of characters to demonstrate different aspects of human nature. Here we see a wily fox outwitted by a quick-thinking cicada, a tortoise triumphing over a self-confident hare and a fable-teller named Aesop silencing those who mock him. Each jewel-like fable provides a warning about the consequences of wrong-doing, as well as offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of Ancient Greeks.
