Essays written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as well as McElroy, and contributions by Janet Levine, Francis Martin Jr., and Claudia Vess. Extensive selected bibliography. Includes works by many well-known American artists. A lavish publication. Originally published as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from Jan. 13 to Mar. 25, 1990, which then traveled to the Brooklyn Museum.
