Boards rubbed and edgeworn, two x two inch triangular-shaped portion of calf missing from front board. Early ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Text tanned and foxed. Good. "First American from the second London edition." Effectively three books in one, the first is an examination of puerperal fever, a devastating infection that affected women within days of childbirth, and was a common cause of death in childbirth up to the 1930s. The second book focuses on scarlet fever, pulmonary consumption, and measles, three common but deadly illnesses of the time, as well as discussing the positive effects of sulphurus water in healing them. The final book examines copaiba (copaiva in the book) balsam, a medecine made from sap of the copaifera species of trees. Used to cure diseases such as bronchitis, hemarrhoids and UTIs, it was and is a popular all-natural medicine The first two sections have their own separate titlepages, the final section with a half title only.
