Date of Publication: 1964* Publisher: The Companion Book Club in association with Hutchinson and Co.* Binding and cover condition: Orange cloth, gilt title to maroon spine label. No bumps or rubs, minimal shelf wear to upper & lower edges and to head and tail of spine, very slight spine lean. VG++* Jacket condition: Red & white design to dust wrapper, white titles to spine and face. NOT PRICE CLIPPED, showing a shelf price of 5/3d. Clean, crisp, tight and bright with no reading wear, no marks to text, very slight spotting to fore-edge, otherwise no visible faults. VG++.* Illustrations: None.* Pages: 224 pp. text. ii pp., blank pages at rear.* Description: Set in the late sixties 'Fail Safe' delivers a tale of computer error and misplaced human faith in machines to control our desires for war and peace. A tiny error in a non-descript machine, buried in a mountain leads to 'Group Six', a collection of US Air Force Vindicator bombers, progressing beyond their fail safe position and into Soviet territory to deliver 20 megaton bombs to Moscow. Desperate attempts by the US military and the President (heavily based on Kennedy but never directly implied) to counteract the aircraft leads to intense communications with Khrushchev and the Soviet military and, ultimately, to a decision being made which challenges the very sanity of all involved.* A NEAR FINE text copy of the 1st/1st thus, with some minor faults in a VG++ dust jacket.*
