Large, folio 10" x 12.5" design. Dark red cloth boards, exquisitely ornate gilt and black embossed cover design and titles, moderate shelf wear, rub. Original front and back covers professionally recased to newer red cloth boards. Cover features image of the wild swans at center, phoenix rising at top, and dragons below w/included title sashes surrounding and borders filled w/flowers, butterflies, and stars. Thick pages generally very good w/newer pastedowns and endpapers at front, back; few at front mended w/acid-free adhesive. Gilt page edges. Bind intact. Illustrated with a dozen magnificent chromolithographic designs in colour with captioned page guards after original drawings by Eleanor Vere Boyle. Ornate decoration throughout. The eight tales comprise: 'The Wild Swans'; 'The Ugly Duckling'; 'The Fellow Traveller'; 'The Little Mermaid'; 'Thumbkinetta'; 'The Angel'; 'The Garden of Paradise'; and, 'The Snow Queen'. Printed at the Chiswick Press by Whittingham and Wilkins. 94 pages and two page catalogue of Sampson, Low & Co.'s New Illustrated and Other Works for the 1871-72 season. Insured post.. First Edition.
