One of the first books on aquariums in America, published soon after Gosse's ground-breaking British work of 1856. This copy has the colored plate of a Victorian aquarium, which many copies lack. 'The aquarium has become, within a short period, almost a necessary luxury in every well-appointed household, both in Europe and America'. [preface]. The author gathered much of his information at Barnum's American Museum, which had some of the first aquariums. A picture of this book is available on request by email.

New York:Dick & Fitzgerald, Publishers. (1858). 1st American edition. viii+121pp+7pp ads. Illustrated, with color frontispiece. Hardcover. Blue covers soiled and quite shelfworn with edges of spine strip rubbed with material starting to seperate. Both ends of spine strip worn and starting to fray, with a small tear to top edge; wear to all edges, and edge points gently bumped and worn to boards. Gilt decoration on front cover dulled. Internally, end-pages age-toned with a previous owners name to 1st free end-page. Otherwise foxing and age-toning scattered throughout. The binding is tight with hinges intact. A good solid copy, of an early book on aquariums.

New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1858. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Very good +. 12mo, 121pp., plus advertisements at rear. Illustrated, with hand-colored frontispiece depicting a home aquarium. A crisp, tight, very good or better copy in the publisher's blue cloth, stamped in gilt. Mild scattered internal foxing, though the frontispiece remains quite clean. Dull creasing to a few leaves. A scarce, wonderful little volume authored by Henry D. Butler, an associate of P. T. Barnum's, who was a pioneer in bringing aquariums as public spectacles into the mainstream (where they had previously been more of a private, academic phenomenon. Scarce in commerce, particularly in attractive condition, and with frontispiece intact.
