The author argues that overpopulation and deprivation were inextricably linked to a third variable - the rapid economic development of rural Ireland that was shaped by British interests. In documenting his view of a rapidly changing pre-famine Ireland, the author focuses on the parish of Killashandra, in County Cavan, during the years 1780 to 1845. Employing a variety of sources, including local statistics, contemporary eyewitness accounts, and manuscript census reports, he is able to record the decisive stages of rural Ireland's transformation.
