Sobre este artículo

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. NFINE/NFINE.Small clip to top corner ffe,price-clipped dw/dj.Very slight shelf-wear top edge dw/dj,no nicks,no tears. Contents bright tight and clean.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,381pp includes b/w map,64 b/w plates. The story of Heyerdahl's first Pacific adventure, before WWII.Having increasing doubts about modern man's uncritical worship of material progress, the young Thor found himself a bride who shared his views and doubts and with her sailed by Tahitian schooner for the lonely jungle island of Fatu-Hiva in the Marquesas Group.Living there, off the land, they reckoned to find the answer to the questions that had been troubling him: Is man's flight from nature really 'progress'? Is man better or worse off in office and factory than primitive man gathering fruits and fishing in the wilderness? What does technological civilization look like from outside? Fatu-Hiva lay outside the shipping lanes. There were no white inhabitants; there was no radio. And the two young people, with no experience whatever of jungle-life,found themselves on an unknown beach with their suitcases, containing nothing but the civilized clothing they had worn on the voyage out.The few Polynesian inhabitants when they emerged from the palms, showed no friendliness but many signs of serious contagious diseases.Thor and his bride withdrew into the jungle, built a bamboo cabin, dressed themselves in loin-cloths and tried to live on what Nature could provide - breadfruit and coconut, jungle fruits, freshwater prawns. They had brought no medicines, nor any other benefits of modern civilization. They made fire rubbing sticks together and they're only possessions were an iron pot and machete.Their struggle against the climate, venomous insects, mosquitoes, and rain, skin disease, native hostility, their hazardous ocean voyages in open boats, and an idyllic month spent with the last Polynesian cannibal and his adopted daughter - make a rich and exciting story.
