London, printed by John Haviland for Roger Jackson, and are to be sold at his shop in Fleetstreet, ouer against the Conduit, 1623.. TITLE CONTINUED: Together with the right ordering of them from time to time, and the sweet profit arising thereof. Written out of experience by Charles Butler. Magd. SECOND EDITION 1623. Small 4to approximately 190 x 145 mm 7½ x 5½ inches, engraved frontispiece, several small text illustrations, 4 leaves of musical notation: 4-part madrigal which was an attempt to capture the piping of the queen at swarming time, the music is printed in such a way as to allow the book to be shared by four voices. Pages unnumbered, 97 leaves=194 pages, signatures [4 ], A 6, B-Z3, lacking Z4 the last blank page, printer's error on recto of K4 with slight loss to bottom of words on last line, rebound in full speckled calf, gilt lettered label, gilt bees between raised bands to spine, blind rules to edges of covers, new cream endpapers. Outer margin of A1 trimmed, no loss to text, long closed tear on D3 running through text, neatly repaired, no loss of text, D4 has loss to one word which has been noted in pencil in the margin "swarming", Y3 has small hole affecting 2 words also noted in pencil in the margin, tips of corners of last leaf neatly repaired, occasional small rust spot, otherwise a very good clean copy. Charles Butler (1571 1647) was one of the first scholars to theorise that bees were led by a Queen rather than a King-bee as suggested by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Butler's book, the Feminine Monarchy, first published in 1609 with revised editions in 1623 and 1634, provides an excellent overview of beekeeping. It contains practical information about how to keep and protect bees, plus a rather eccentric inclusion of a madrigal for 4 people imitating the sounds of swarming bees. See: British Bee Books, A Bibliography 1500-1976, pages 43-45, "This is the greatest early bee book and contains the best account of skep beekeeping"; Catalogue of Bee Books, by Lt.-Col. H.J.O. Walker, pages 11-12; ESTC S107151. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST.

Descripción:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages. This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Leer más

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
