The Oxfor d C ompanion to French Literature sums up de Kock's style as follows: "..rollicking, risky, or more often frankly coarse, frequently sentimental, and fundamentally good-natured novels. They were read and enjoyed in England (by Macaulay and Elizabeth B a r rett Browning among others); and at a time when Balzac and G. Sand were exciting interest in France they were more representative of contemporary French fiction for the average English reader than the works of these authors.".
