In 1797, the Republic of Venice fell to the French. Beginning in April of that year, the city of Vicenza and the surrounding Euganean hills were under Napoleon's French military rule for only 8 months before it was ceded to the Austrians. This poem celebrates Napoleon and the liberation of Vicenza from the doges of Venice, coupling it to the French day of liberation (14 July, known as 26 Messidoro under the short-lived Republican calendar). Among the verses: "See us insulting the Venetian lion. We're not afraid anymore. And he bites his own lips, quavering helplessly in anger." The French "Comité de l'Instruction Publique" was dedicated to the removal of Church doctrine from public education.
