The Stayner family lived in Nova Scotia during the 1780's where is father was born. F.H Stayner's father, Thomas Allen Stayner (1788-1868) who was a soldier and the postmaster general of Upper and Lower Canada from 1827 to 1851.
F.H. (Frederick Henry) accompanied his parents to Toronto after 1851 when his father retired and moved from Quebec becoming first a director and then Vice-President of the Bank of Upper Canada. F.H. is listed at UCC in 1851. The family is listed in the 1861 Toronto census, living on Wellington Street. Frederick Henry was listed in that record as being a law student. Stayner became a partner in the law office of Boyd & Stayner 74 King St. E, Toronto, but he appears to have spent considerable time in England, living in Devonshire.
F.H. was married at Dumfries, Scotland in 1873 to Harriet ("Hallie") McCulloch (1839-1913) She was apparently married before to John James Johnston Thomson (1833-1860) and had one daughter, Catherine (b. 1859) by him. F.H. and Harriet do not appear to have had any children together.
Stayner is listed in the various census returns for Devon between 1881 and 1921. He died there at Halsdown House, Devon, on Feb. 10, 1925 in his 90th year.
